Frequently Asked Questions

What is age grading in running?

Age grading is a system that allows runners of different ages to compare performances on a level playing field. It calculates what percentage of the world-record standard for your age and sex you achieved — so a 60-year-old can be directly compared to a 30-year-old, accounting for the natural decline in performance with age.

How is age grade percentage calculated?

The age grade % is calculated as: (age-adjusted world record time / your finish time) × 100. The age-adjusted standard is the open world record divided by the age factor for your age group. This produces a percentage where 100% would mean matching the age-group world record.

Is 70% a good age grade?

Yes — 70% is considered 'Regional Class', meaning your performance is competitive at a regional or state level. Above 80% is National Class (competing at national championship level), and 90%+ is World Class. For most recreational runners, 50–60% is typical, and anything above 65% is a genuinely strong performance.

Can age grading fairly compare runners of different ages?

Age grading provides a useful relative comparison but uses population-level averages. Individual variation is large — some athletes decline faster or slower than average. It's most useful for tracking your own improvement over time or comparing within a similar age bracket rather than as an absolute cross-age comparison.

How can I improve my age grade?

Since age grade measures your time relative to age-group world records, improving your finishing time directly improves your grade. Consistent training, structured speed work, better race pacing, and optimal nutrition all contribute. As you age, maintaining high training volumes and intensity is the most effective way to preserve your age grade.
