Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good triathlon finish time?
Sprint: 60–90 min (elite ~50 min). Olympic: 2–2.5 hrs (elite ~1:45). Half Ironman 70.3: 4–5.5 hrs (elite ~3:30). Full Ironman: 9–13 hrs (elite ~7:45). First-timers should focus on finishing and enjoying the experience rather than chasing a time.
How accurate are finish time estimates?
This calculator assumes steady pacing with no mechanical issues, nutrition crises, or severe weather. Real races add time due to open water navigation, crowded transitions, aid station stops, and accumulated fatigue. Use these estimates as a planning target and build in 5–10% buffer time.
Which discipline slows you down the most?
For most age-group triathletes, the bike leg takes the most total time simply because it's the longest. However, a poor swim can compromise your bike effort through elevated heart rate and fatigue. Poor pacing on the bike almost always ruins the run — the bike-run relationship is the most critical in triathlon.
How do I improve my transition times?
Transition (T1 and T2) is often called the 'fourth discipline'. Practice racking/unracking your bike, putting on helmet and shoes quickly, and running with your bike. Elite athletes spend 60–90 seconds in transition; most age-groupers spend 2–4 minutes. Laying out gear in advance and rehearsing in training makes a big difference.
What is the difference between Sprint and Olympic distance?
A Sprint triathlon is roughly 750m swim / 20km bike / 5km run and typically takes 1–1.5 hours. An Olympic (standard) triathlon doubles that to 1.5km / 40km / 10km and takes 2–3 hours. Sprint is ideal for beginners; Olympic is the most common competitive distance and the one contested at the Olympics.
